Enrollment up in Tangipahoa Parish schools
AMITE - Superintendent Mark Kolwe says about 350 additional students are attending schools in Tangipahoa Parish.
Kolwe says a total of 19,528 students are enrolled, up 2 percent from August 2012.
Hammond Eastside Magnet School Principal Maureen Terese reports her student count had reached 900, a 13.6 percent increase.
All Hammond schools saw increases in enrollment. Hammond High Magnet School saw a 3 percent increase, Hammond Junior High Magnet School a 1 percent increase, Hammond Westside Elementary Montessori School a 6.3 percent increase and Woodland Park Elementary Magnet School saw an 11.7 percent increase.
Members of the school board claim Hammond's variety of educational opportunities - including magnets such as International Baccalaureate, communications and Montessori - are attracting middle-class families back to the public school system.
