BATON ROUGE - Two EMTs and an officer injured after a suspected drunk driver plowed through the scene of a wreck early Sunday morning are recovering well.

First responders were at the scene of an accident on I-10 East at the 10/12 split at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when a vehicle driven by 25-year-old William Smith crashed into the already wrecked vehicle. The already crashed car then hit six people gathered to help with the initial wreck including EMTs, a Baton Rouge Police officer and a Good Samaritan.

Acadian Ambulance reported on Thursday morning that both EMTs injured during the incident were “doing fine.” One of them was discharged from a Baton Rouge hospital on Sunday morning.

BRPD also reported on Thursday morning that the officer injured in the incident was discharged from the hospital and is recovering, although not yet back at work.

News 2 is working to determine the condition of the other people that were transported to the hospital with injuries during the wreck. Injuries sustained included internal bleeding, head injuries, lacerated arteries and broke bones were sustained. However, all were expected to survive after the crash.

The second EMT was more seriously injured in the crash after he was dragged through a grassy area along the interstate. He was just downgraded to a regular room from Intensive Care and is currently rehabbing at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, according to Acadian’s Justin Cox. He reported he was doing well aside from remaining pain.

Smith was later taken into police custody while still displaying “extreme signs of impairment” after fleeing the scene immediately after the crash. He was booked on charges of 1st offense DWI, vehicular negligent injuring, hit and run, reckless operation and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He bonded out on Monday.
