Employ BR spring job fair
BATON ROUGE- Employ BR Job Fair is turning job seekers into employers.
"I came to this job fair and met a great group of people, they went back and told the president of the company about me. He called, flew down to New Orleans, and now I'm here to hire people again," explained Kelly Leduff, site leader for Railserve at Dow Chemical. "I never knew that you could be this happy going to work. I work with a great group of guys and girls and I love what I do every day so if you are even questioning what you do... it's one thing to make money, it's another thing to be happy, so take an opportunity, take a risk, step out on that limb and see what happens."
The labor department says the unemployment rate dropped in 23 states during the month of April.
The Louisiana unemployment rate remained unchanged, although the number of people with a job increased. People searching for jobs and the number of unemployed residents increased as well. In April, 40 states gained jobs and 223,000 more people were hired.
Employ BR is hosting their bi-annual job fair at the River Center Thursday. The event connects job seekers with more than 100 employers from throughout Louisiana, and will have business representatives from a variety of different fields.
Event organizers encourage job-seekers to dress for the career they want and bring their resume to the fair. There will be counselors on-site to help applicants with any last minute questions. Employ BR recommends you familiarize yourself with a company before approaching the booth. The fair also seeks to help young veterans that may not have a college diploma.
Cynthia Douglas, from Employ BR, says businesses are interested in many skills that men and women learn while serving in the military.
"We have veteran staff members that work with us and they actually speak to those individuals and candidates," said Douglas. "They help them put their skills into terminology and on a resume that will speak directly to an employer about what their skills are."
The job fair will also have resources on site to print resumes and even conduct job interviews. You can get a complete list of employers that will be at the job fair here.
Employ BR's job fair is being held at the River Center in downtown Baton Rouge. It opens to assist veterans at 9 a.m., and opens at 11 a.m. for the general public.
