Federal and state emergency officials began surveying damage Monday in the counties hit hardest by a weekend tornado that killed 10 people in Mississippi.

Gov. Haley Barbour says he hopes to have the state and federal preliminary damage assessments by Tuesday so he can submit them to President Obama by Wednesday.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said the survey team from FEMA would join state officials on a tour of the heaviest damaged areas.

Flynn said it is part of the process that could lead to a possible presidential disaster declaration. He said the crews will be in Warren, Yazoo, Holmes, Choctaw and Attala counties on Monday.
He said they may visit other areas.
