Emergency declared in St. Tammany Parish
COVINGTON, La. - St. Tammany Parish is under an emergency declaration as Tropical Storm Karen stirs up the Gulf of Mexico.
Parish President Pat Brister has signed an executive order declaring the emergency as a preventative measure in advance of the storm. No evacuations have been ordered at this time.
Brister urged residents to prepare for the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds, particularly those in low-lying areas. She also urged residents to secure items on their property, clear storm drains and stock up on food, water, medication and other necessities before the storm gets closer to land.
She says parish government is operating under a "normal" work day and the parish's emergency operations center is partially activated.
