Elayn Hunt Correctional Center escapee apprehended
ST. GABRIEL - A man is back behind bars after attempting to escape from the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center early Friday morning.
Joshua Kelly, 38, worked as an infirmary orderly at EHCC and was working on a night cleaning crew when he escaped.
Officials say Kelly overpowered a correctional officer/EMT on duty. Kelly partially disguised himself as a correctional officer by putting on a uniform jacket. Kelly then drove an EHCC ambulance out of the facility.
The correctional officer was not seriously injured.
Several law enforcement agencies assisted Department of Corrections officers in the search and apprehension, including the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, Gonzales Police Department, St. Gabriel Police Department, Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police.
Kelly was apprehended around 2:30 a.m. in Ascension Parish at the intersection of Highways 73 and 75.
Jimmy LeBlanc, Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections Secretary, says "There are still unanswered questions regarding the escape that will be revealed once our investigation is complete. As per Department policy, we will do a thorough review of the incident to determine exactly how this happened and take appropriate measures as warranted."
Kelly was serving a 65-year sentence for armed robbery convictions.
