BATON ROUGE - Former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards spoke with News 2 about his chances making it to Congress.

The 86-year-old Edwards announced Monday at the Press Club of Baton Rouge he'd seek the state's 6th District seat.

Edwards served four terms as governor before his conviction on racketeering charges over riverboat casino licenses. His conviction bars him from state office, but not a congressional seat.

Edwards acknowledged some concerns about someone his age running for Congress, noting there was a 101-year-old candidate in Florida.

"By the time I'm his age I'll be in my 7th term," Edwards quipped.

Rep. Bill Cassidy is not seeking re-election to seat because he is challenging Senator Mary Landrieu for her position. So far seven Republicans and two Democrats have entered the race for the seat.

Republicans came out swinging shortly after Edwin's announcement. The state Republican party sent out a statement saying "(Edwards') antics may be fit for a reality show, but not public office." Craig McCulloch, a Baker businessman running for the seat, called Edwards' time in office "a stain our our state's history."

News 2's Jason Newton will have more on how the announcement shakes up the race for the 6th District tonight.
