Education chief seeks day care tax credit changes

BATON ROUGE - Superintendent of Education John White is suggesting the state tweak tax credits it offers to day care centers, tying them to new grading standards being devised for Louisiana's publicly-funded early childhood education programs.

That's among the ideas White unveiled Tuesday as he works on a new law that calls for the development of a common assessment and grading system for the education programs.

The law is to be phased in by the 2015-16 school year, but the building blocks of a plan are due to lawmakers by March 1. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will discuss White's proposals in December.

White wants to adjust existing tax credits that reward "school readiness" for child care providers and staff, to dovetail with the grading. Adjustments would require legislative approval.
