BATON ROUGE – A deputy who was injured last year during an ambush on law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge, is returning to work. 

East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Sergeant Bruce Simmons was shot while responding to reports of a man with a rifle at the B-Quik on Airline Highway on July 17, 2016. Simmons was shot while trying to help Deputy Nick Tullier, who was shot and wounded during the ambush. Simmons was shot in the left arm, resulting in several bones being shattered, according to East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore's report of the ambush. Simmons radioed for help after he and Tullier were shot. 

One EBRSO deputy and two Baton Rouge Police Department Officers were killed. 

Since the ambush, Simmons has had several surgeries and gone through therapy for his arm. 

Pam Simmon's, Bruce's wife, posted on Facebook on Tuesday about her husband's upcoming return to work. She stated that he will continue to be monitored by his doctor with therapy. She thanked the community's support through her husband's recovery. 

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said that the agency has requested a work clearance form and are awaiting an official word back from his doctor.
