BATON ROUGE – A weekend arrest of a man accused of murder does not help ease the pain following the shooting death of Charles Barney.

Barney was murdered Friday night in Gardere, trying to stop people from selling drugs. Witnesses said there was an argument and Ronald Joseph, 29, shot Barney outside his apartment. Barney, 33, died at the scene.

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Deputies arrested Joseph Sunday. Joseph is charged with murder and illegal use of a weapon.

A friend said Monday, she is still shaken about what happened.

“He came through my front door and said, 'call 911.' I just panicked, Christine Harris said. “He said, 'tell my mom I love her and I'm sorry.'”

Harris and others remembered Barney as someone who tried to keep order in their community.

"He always tried to work stuff out, always try to be the peace-maker, always. It's just not right," said Harris.
