BATON ROUGE - Evening mosquito spraying just started in East Baton Rouge.

East Baton Rouge Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control officials said just recently they've seen the mosquito population increase and started spraying for the first time Easter weekend.  They say the problem areas are in the southern parts of the parish from Hooo Shoo Too Road to Highland Road.

Experts say this past warmer winter could bring even more mosquitoes this summer.

"Last fall, we had huge numbers (of mosquitoes)," Randy Vaeth, EBR Mosquito Abatement Assistant Director, said in an interview Monday.  "Those mosquitoes laid eggs now that we're having the warm weather combined with rain, those eggs are hatching.  So, we're ready for the season to begin."

As more rain approaches and hotter temperatures are underway, officials said we could start to feel the bite sooner than expected.

"If we get a lot of rain we won't be seeing the mosquitoes," Vaeth said.  "They kind of rest in vegetation, but by this weekend we may when everybody's back out doing some yard work there's going to be some nice weather this weekend, if the weather forecast is accurate.  So, you probably will see some  try to bite you."

Evening spraying has not yet started in West Baton Rouge or Ascension, although Ascension and EBR are taking spray requests from property owners.

Officials encourage resident to empty out pooling or sitting water outside and wear protection for skin.
