NEW ORLEANS – Congressman Cedric Richmond keeps his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, beating out-going Baton Rouge mayor Kip Holden.

Richmond and Holden, both Democrats, faced each other in the oddly-shaped 2nd Congressional District.  In addition to having held the seat since 2011, the fact that the district is predominantly situated around Richmond's native New Orleans helped him carry the votes.

Richmond and Holden have had some tension with one another in the past months. Holden was vocal about not being invited by Richmond, Governor Edwards and three local mayors went to Washington D.C. to talk to congress following the August flood.

Richmond responded to Holden's comments by saying, "Honestly, there was nothing the Mayor of Baton Rouge could offer last week aside from what the other Mayors and the Governor provided during testimony."

Richmond has been the U.S. Representative for the 2nd congressional district since 2011. Holden has been mayor of Baton Rouge for 12 years after being elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008 and 2012.

A third, lesser-known Democrat, Kenneth Cutno, also campaigned for the seat.
