EAST FELICIANA PARISH - Students in East Feliciana Parish schools got to a early start on the school year today, hitting the books on the first day of school.

Teachers in the area prepared during the summer to begin lessons on the first day to get a good start.

Jackson Elementary School principal Megan Phillips says the school year is off to a smooth start so far. She wants to have at least 20 percent of the elementary students score a level higher on the state proficiency test.

East Feliciana High School principal Bobby Washington says the bar has been raised for instructors and students to perform better in the classroom. Each student in 11th grade will be required to take the ACT this year. Washington says he wants each student to score a minimum of 18.
