CLINTON - The East Feliciana Parish School Board unanimously approved a central office reorganization plan that Superintendent Henderson Lewis Jr. said would save the district $500,000 but protect classrooms from budget cuts.

Board members agreed Tuesdays to declare a financial emergency, called an exigency, and voted to freeze 1.5 percent annual raises for most employees until the parish's budget picture clarifies.

Lewis said the financial exigency declaration will give administrators and the board more flexibility if personnel layoffs are required because it supersedes the district's reduction-in-force policy.

Lewis said the district faces a possible $300,000 deficit for the fiscal year that ends June 30 and has less than 5 percent of a normal year's budget in its general fund reserve.
