BATON ROUGE - The East Feliciana School Board could have a new grade policy in place for students who want to be involved in extra curricular activities.

The school board will be discussing the possibility of adopting the same policy used by the high school athletic association, which would allow students to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities with a minimum grade point average of 1.5.

A change many in the community said they aren't sure if they agree.

"It does take away an incentive because if you want to work hard to be involved in something than you're putting in the time and the work," said longtime East Feliciana resident Rev. Cherless Miller. "You're dealing with their education...that's their future."

Other residents said they agree and believe the changes could help other students get access to scholarships through their extra-curricular activities. Some some residents in the neighbor who graduated from Clinton High said they remember when students had to maintain a 2.5 GPA back in 2003 in order to participate in any after school activities.

However, the Superintendent Sam Carlos said if the board approves the policy those student athletes with low grade point averages would have to be involved in a mandatory recovery plan to improve their grades over time.

He said students who have a 1.5 up to a 1.9 grade point average would be required to attend after school tutoring, be tracked on a weekly basis by school authorities and require that parents attend a monthly academic meeting with those students.

Four other districts also have a minimum GPA of C- for student athletes. East Baton Rouge recently adopted the requirements. The East Feliciana school board votes on the new policy on Dec. 1.
