Area schools are taking precautions to make sure students are safe at home ahead of this evening's forecasted severe weather.

Officials with East Feliciana Parish Schools dimissed classes at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Parents are able to pick up their children at that time, but school administration says buses will run as normal at that time to be sure kids are able to get home.

Around the time those schools were letting out, administrators with the East Baton Rouge School System announced that all elementary after-school activities would be cancelled Thursday evening. Parents should take the appropriate measures to make sure their children are able to be picked up. EBRSS administrators stressed that today's cancellations only impact after-school activities and not regularly scheduled classes.

Just before 3 p.m., Ascension Parish schools announced that all after-school activities were also cancelled in the parish.

Baton Rouge Community College cancelled evening classes Thursday, but the college said the normal class schedule will resume tomorrow unless otherwise indicated.

We’ll keep further school closures updated here on WBRZ.com as information is released.

GOHSEP released a warning about the potential severe storms Thursday morning. For an advance look at what kind of weather that could be ahead this evening, check out News 2 Meteorologist Josh Eachus' story.
