Driver survives after car plunges into marsh
LAPLACE - State Police said a 20-year-old driver survived her vehicle's plunge off I-55 in St. John Parish and into a marsh 30 feet below the highway, thanks to her seatbelt.
Troopers said Arielle Fleming of LaPlace was headed north on the elevated highway Thursday morning when she lost control of her car and went over the guardrail. The car flipped during the fall and landed partially submerged in the marsh.
State Police said Fleming was wearing her seatbelt and safely got out of the vehicle, where she was rescued by a nearby fishing vessel.
She was taken to the River Parishes Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.
