NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pickup that fell from a downtown parking garage.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at a parking garage at Camp and Poydras streets.

Officer Gary Flot says the pickup crashed through a steel cable barrier and a glass window from either the fifth or sixth floor of the garage and landing upside down on the street below.

No one on the ground was hurt.

Flot says the Orleans Parish coroner will perform an autopsy and release the victim's name.

Police said that the male driver was pronounced dead on the scene and no one else was in the vehicle and no one else was injured. Streets remained closed for several hours as police investigated.

Construction workers said they tried to free the man from the crushed vehicle, but were unable.
