GEISMAR - Emergency workers freed an 18-wheeler driver who became trapped Thursday afternoon when his truck ran off the road in Ascension Parish.
Family members clapped for the rescuers after they cut the driver free and loaded him onto a stretcher.
State Police closed the portion of River Road near Ashland Road where the wreck happened. Troopers said the 18-wheeler ran off the road and rolled into the trees.
The extent of the driver's injuries was not clear. An Acadian Air Med helicopter was called in to take the driver to OLOL hospital in Baton Rouge.
