Driver arrested in Basin Bridge crash
IBERVILLE PARISH - State police says the driver of the car in the deadly crash on the Basin Bridge is out of the hospital and in jail.
Investigators say Lois Rudd, 24, flipped her SUV over the guard rail on the Basin Bridge into the swamp below. In her car were 5 children ranging from 5 weeks old to 9 years old and one adult passenger. The adult passenger, Mina Bell, 25, was killed.
Rudd is charged with negligent homicide, 5 counts of negligent injury and careless operation. She is booked into the Iberville Parish jail.
As of Sunday evening, three of the children in the vehicle were at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and two were at Baton Rouge General Hospital.
The crash happened at around 8:15 p.m. Friday night on I-10 west just passed the beginning of the Basin Bridge. The interstate was closed for more than four hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
