Dow reports gas release at area facility
PLAQUEMINE - Dow said there was a release of pyrolysis gasoline, or Pygas, from its chemical plant in Iberville Parish Monday evening.
"The release has been stopped and Dow is in the process of recovering the product," a spokesperson said in an email with WBRZ.
The company was monitoring the air around the facility and said there was no offsite detection of the product but since Pygas has a very low odor threshold, people will be able to smell it even at low concentrations.
People who live near the plant reported smelling a gas-like smell after the release.
"We regret any inconvenience to the community around us," the company said.
It was not clear what caused the release.
Pygas is a byproduct of ethylene and propylene production.
