Double murder investigated in Donaldsonville
DONALDSONVILLE - Two people were shot dead Monday afternoon in Donaldsonville roughly an hour before an anti-crime rally was scheduled to begin.
The shooting happened on Latino Drive off of St. Patrick Street. The sheriff's office identified the victims as Benny Booker, 29, and Chad Nichols, 37.
The parish sheriff said they have no witnesses to the actual shooting, just people who heard gunshots and found the victims. Late Monday, deputies released video surveillance of vehicles they believe are connected to the shooting.
The incident comes nearly a week after a pair of shootings in Donaldsonville. On Jan. 20, a deputy was shot in the hand after stopping a car filled with people suspected of stealing ammo from a nearby Walmart. On Jan. 21, deputies said 18-year-old Allen Williams shot another teen during an argument over stolen property. Both shootings happened in the vicinity of St. Patrick Street, a few blocks from each other.
A prayer vigil for the youth of Donaldsonville was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Louisiana Park on Railroad Avenue. The vigil was organized in response to the shootings last week.
