DOTD worker injured after falling from bridge, into trench
BAYWOOD - A state bridge worker was injured in a construction accident Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to this rural area of East Baton Rouge Parish, about two miles from the East Feliciana Parish line, to rescue a worker who had fallen off a bridge on Greenwell Springs Road and into a trench that collapsed. Callers reported the emergency at 37636 Greenwell Springs Road, near Whitten Creek.
Greenwell Springs Road is also Louisiana Highway 37.
Sources said one worker was transported to an area hospital with cuts, but no major injuries. The worker was responsive. It was not clear how severe the collapse of the trench was - or if the worker was ever completely covered by the debris from the trench.
DOTD confirmed the injured person was a member of the state's bridge maintenance crew, but a spokesperson said the department could not comment further.
The bridge crew is working on the bridge that crosses Whitten Creek. In June, the state closed about three miles of the highway over the creek so the bridge could be replaced due to its age and a deteriorated condition.
The work and highway closure is expected to last about eight weeks.
