BATON ROUGE - The Department of Transportation and Development said I-110 flooded and closed for hours Sunday because lightning took out power to the storm drain's pump.
State transportation officials said there is a backup generator that was on, but it failed to provide power to the pump.
More than two inches of rain fell in less than two hours bringing traffic to a halt in both directions between North 22nd and Capitol Access.
That stretch of interstate commonly floods during heavy rainstorms, so News 2 wanted to see if there was adequate drainage.
We counted around ten drains, southbound, and DOTD said that's more than enough to handle heavy rain.
So we checked our records and found two occasions this year where the same area flooded.
The state maintained, Sunday was an isolated incident, and the problem has been fixed.
