DONALDSONVILLE - A piece of history along Donaldsonville's Mississippi river front is getting a face-lift. Crescent Park, and the area around the park, will be updated with a new pavilion, a paved plaza, park lighting, trees and a dominant gateway, leading people to downtown.

The city will use $780,000 in state funds for the project. The funds, were originally designated for a water well in Port Allen, but went unused. State Sen. Troy Brown obtained the funds, for improvements to Donaldsonville.

"Eventually, this will become an area where people are going to spend a lot of time with their kids and family," said Brown.

Crescent park has seen some decay over the years, and with this money, City Council Chairman Raymond Aucoin says it will attract more visitors to the historic city.

"Not only will the locals be able to enjoy it, people sitting on the levee and relaxing on the late afternoons, it could possibly bring in, we hope, some tourists," said Aucoin.
