NEW ROADS - Animal lovers are crying foul after a dog was burned with chemicals and left for dead.

"He smelled like death," Pointe Coupee Parish Animal Shelter adoption director Carol Vincent said. "If you've moved things off the side of the road, he smelled worse than that."

The German Shepard named Mr. Overton was found severely injured on a highway near New Roads on June 22nd.

Vincent believes Mr. Overton was burned purposely by someone trying to treat him for fleas. But instead of getting help, the person abandoned the dog.

"They think it's a fix for fleas and it's not," Vincent said.

"I would suspect that it was something like diesel or what they call burnt motor oil. I've seen them use Lysol," veterinarian Dr. Diane Rayburn said.

Rayburn treated the animal with hydrotherapy, antibiotics and burn cream.

In just three weeks, the one-year-old animal's infection is cleared and he's nearly healed completely.

"It's very gratifying to know that you can help them if people let you," Dr. Rayburn said.

"We haven't found anyone who would even step up and say they've found the dog and whoever had him lost a gem," Vincent said.

Mr. Overton is expected to be ready for adoption next week.

If you're interested in taking Mr. Overton in, contact Pointe Coupee Parish Animal Shelter.
