DOE names 2014 teacher, principal of the year
BATON ROUGE- Two St. Charles Parish educators are taking the state's top honors for teachers and principals.
The Department of Education named Ajit "AJ" Pethe (PEH-thay), principal of Luling Elementary, as the 2014 Louisiana Principal of the Year, while La'Keisha McKinney, a reading and math teacher at R. J. Vial Elementary in Paradis, is the state's Teacher of the Year.
Both received the recognition at the 7th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration.
Pethe has served as principal at Luling for the past six years, leading it to increase its school performance score by nearly 20 points during his tenure.
McKinney, with 16 years of class experience, is a district mentor and member of the College and Career Readiness Taskforce and the School Improvement Team.
