DOC: Prisoner shot trying to escape Elayn Hunt
ST. GABRIEL - Department of Corrections officials said officers from Elayn Hunt Correctional Center shot a man convicted of attempted murder who tried to escape Friday afternoon.
A DOC spokesperson said officers shot and injured Troy Watson, 22, after Watson fled from a work crew he was assigned to.
The spokesperson said around 1 p.m. Watson tried to escape and was chased by two armed officers who normally accompany line crews. The officers said they ordered Watson to stop several times before firing warning shots, but he ignored their commands. That's when the spokesperson said the officers shot Watson to prevent his escape, hitting him in the torso.
"At that point in time, per departmental policy, they were authorized to use lethal force in order to prevent the escape from happening," said Pam Laborde, Communications Director for The DOC.
The DOC said Watson was taken to the correctional center's infirmary for treatment. He was later taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He has since been returned to Elayn Hunt with minor injuries to recover.
Watson is serving a 34-year sentence for attempted second degree murder, according to the DOC. He was not scheduled for release until 2043. Five years ago at age 17, Watson shot someone over a cell phone.
The spokesperson said the prison would conduct an internal review of the incident. They said it appears at this time that all procedures were properly followed by corrections staff.
