Louisiana health officials are reopening an oyster harvesting area in Terrebonne Parish, after it was closed in response to the Gulf oil spill.
The Department of Health and Hospitals announced today that oyster harvesting Area 19 is being reopened just before sunrise Friday, after it had been deemed safe by them, the USDA and other state and federal agencies.
Area 19 is west of the Mississippi River in Terrebonne Parish, and was partially closed July 1. Five other oyster harvesting areas remain fully closed, and three other areas are still partially closed.
DHH still asks anyone that sees oil or an oil sheen in oyster harvesting areas to call their hotline at 1-800-256-2775.
