BATON ROUGE, La.- State health regulators have confirmed two new cases of West Nile virus, bringing this year's total to 12.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals on Friday said both new cases are from St. Tammany Parish.

One of the new cases is neuroinvasive disease, which is severe and typically results in swelling of the brain or spinal cord.

The other is West Nile fever, which is less severe, with most people suffering only mild, flu-like symptoms.

So far this year, Louisiana has confirmed six neuroinvasive disease cases, four West Nile fever and two asymptomatic cases.

The state's record low was 29 cases in 2009, including 11 neuroinvasive illnesses.

Last year, there were a total of 34, 20 of them neuroinvasive.
