BATON ROUGE - Detectives said Monday they're investigating a rash of incidents where cloned credit cards were used to make illegal purchases in Baton Rouge.

The first happened May 13 at the Toys-R-Us on Mall Drive around 5:55 p.m. Deputies said a man used a cloned company credit card at the store to purchase more than $300 worth of gift cards. The person was wearing a blue and white checkered pattern button-shirt and blue jeans at the time.

The second incident happened at the Dollar General located at 1911 Staring Lane just before 9 p.m. on May 28. Reports indicate at least three victims discovered their debit cards had been cloned and fraudulently used at the Staring Dollar General and other retail locations throughout Baton Rouge to fraudulently purchase gift cards. The person in this case was wearing a light blue dress shirt, tie and dark colored pants at the time of the purchases.

Credit card cloning, also known as "skimming", is an increasingly common technique where criminals copy stolen credit card information onto bogus cards. While credit card theft isn't a new crime, the cloning technique is.

Anyone with information concerning any of the incidents or the suspects is urged to contact the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office at (225) 389-5000.
