METAIRIE - A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy shot a man in the shoulder who took a police car to try to escape.

Sheriff's department spokesman John Fortunato says 34-year-old Corey Rebaldo of Metairie, jumped from his truck and fled from the deputy, then doubled back and jumped into the police cruiser.

The deputy opened fire and hit Rebaldo in the shoulder, according to Fortunato, causing him to crash into the canal.

Rebaldo got out of the canal and tried to jump into a second vehicle, according to Fortunato, but the motorist sped away and Rebaldo jumped back into the canal. Rebaldo finally came out of the canal waters after deputies forced him at gunpoint.

Rebaldo was taken to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.
