METAIRIE - Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies say a 17-year-old robbery suspect was shot and killed by a JPSO deputy late Tuesday night inside of a NOLA.com warehouse in Metairie.

Security camera footage from the scene shows the suspect going through the warehouse. A deputy appears and then the two engage in a standoff with just feet separating them. The suspect, now identified as Devon Martes, appears to point his gun at the officer,  who drew his own gun in response. The suspect then puts the weapon at his side before bringing it up again to point it at the officer before being shot.

JPSO Sheriff Newell Normand says that Martes attempted to fire at the officer, but his gun jammed.

Now, Deputy David Dalton is being called “one of the luckiest men in America.”

The sheriff’s office reported Martes was shot a total of six times.

Sheriff Normand became agitated during an afternoon press conference concerning the shooting as he brought up some reports calling Martes “the victim” of the shooting.

“Devon Martes is not the victim,” Normand said loudly. “The victim in this case is Deputy Dalton.”

The sheriff also noted that he was grateful the shooting happened in a location where surveillance cameras clearly captured the events as they unfolded. He also spoke about the dangers JPSO deputies face every day as he noted that 890 guns have been taken off the streets of that jurisdiction within the last year.

“Split-second decisions,” Normand said. “If that gun hadn’t jammed, I could be planning the funeral of a deputy.”

WWL-TV in New Orleans reported that witnesses saw two suspicious people “rolling something shiny” down the street after a reported robbery at around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Ford Street and Cleary Avenue in Metairie.

Witnesses told authorities that the two men were later seen hopping a fence in the area of a lot where new vehicles were stored. Another call from witnesses reported the subjects were running toward the nearby I-10 service road.

Officers began patrolling the area surrounding the calls from witnesses, and they eventually spotted a man running toward the garage area of a Times-Picayune warehouse garage on the service road.

One of the responding officers, Deputy David Dalton, reported he saw a male suspect run into the garage. He told investigators that when he pursued him, the man turned around and faced him with a handgun drawn and pointed at him.

That’s when Dalton drew his weapon and fired six shots. The subject went down and was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.

Deputies reported that the victim was carrying a 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number, according to WWL-TV.

The second suspect remains at large. Deputies have yet to release the name of the suspect that was killed.

When deputies searched the vehicle parking lot where the illegal activity was reported, they located a new Ford pickup truck that was resting on blocks and missing two wheels.
