DONALDSONVILLE - Ascension Parish Sheriff's deputies arrested a Donaldsonville couple after their 8-year-old girl was shot in the chest, and they said the mother tried to cover up what happened.

Deputies arrested Jennifer Mitchell, 31, and her husband Henry Mitchell Sr., 46, after an investigation into the shooting this weekend.

Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said deputies were called to Prevost Hospital after midnight Sunday to investigate an accidental shooting. They met with the girl, who'd been grazed in the chest by a gunshot, and her mother who told them the girl had found her pistol in a nightstand and shot herself by accident.

Bacala said further investigation found Mitchell made up her story, and had told her daughter to lie to deputies as well. He said they learned Mitchell and her husband had been in a heated argument, during which she armed herself with the pistol. It accidentally fired during the argument, going through her husband's leg and hitting their daughter.

Deputies booked Jennifer Mitchell on charges of aggravated battery, negligent injury, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and criminal mischief. Henry Mitchell was booked on charges of simple assault, accessory after the fact to negligent injury, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and obstruction of justice.

The Office of Child Services took the couple's three children into their custody. Bacala said he expects they will be released to their grandmother.
