Deputies shot in deadly attack receive new armor

MORGAN CITY - Two sheriff's deputies injured in a shooting which killed a Chitimacha Police officer received new body armor recently.

Safariland and Barney's Police Supplies presented the armor to St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies Jason Javier and Matthew Strickland, who were both wounded in the January attack by Wilbert Thibodeaux of Charenton.

Investigators said this past January Thibodeaux shot and killed an elderly man, Eddie Lyons, before setting his mobile on fire. When authorities responded to reports of the shooting Thibodeaux shot and killed Sgt. Rick Riggenbach, and wounded Javier and Strickland. Thibodeaux was arrested on arson and murder charges.

The sheriff's office said Javier's body armor saved his life, and both deputies received free armor and fittings from the manufacturer.
