Deputies release new details in deadly hotel shootout
BATON ROUGE- Deputies released additional details Friday night about a hotel shootout that ended in a suspect killing himself a day earlier.
Shrapnel that caused superficial injuries to an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputy and a Louisiana State Trooper came from a ricochet from a shot fired by another sheriff's deputy a department spokesperson said.
The sheriff's office also said deputies arrested a friend of Jessie Gordon after the incident for helping in his run from the law. Kelly Prestidge, 24, was booked into jail on two counts of accessory to theft and one count of accessory after the fact for harboring a fugitive.
Thursday, Gordon shot himself in a hotel room when deputies tried to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. As deputies were retreating from the room when the shot was fired, one returned fire and the bullet hit a brick wall, creating shrapnel.
Before the shootout at the hotel, deputies contacted Prestidge about discussing a possible surrender with Gordon. She said Gordon told her he would rather die than go back to jail, so she helped him elude capture.
Deputies also said Gordon pawned $2,000 worth of stolen silverware from Prestidge's parents home. They believe Gordon is connected to other area burglaries.
