Deputies: man, believed to be drunk, slips on tracks and is hit
INDEPENDENCE- A 61-year-old man is dead and authorities think alcohol was a factor in his death where he was hit by a train in Tangipahoa Parish Friday.
The sheriff's office said Robert Moore ran across the tracks at Velma Road just north of town, hoping to beat an approaching Amtrak Train. As he crossed the tracks, he stumbled onto the rails and the train, moving at 79-miles-per-hour, hit him.
The train consisted of two locomotives and seven passenger coaches, a spokesperson said.
A toxicology test is pending and the investigation continues.
