PIERRE PART- Deputies are investigating a murder-suicide that happened Wednesday in Assumption Parish.
Deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Tut Street in Pierre Part around 7:40 a.m.
Officials say Henry Walker Jr., 29, used a shotgun to shoot his girlfriend, 26-year-old Heather Granier in the head. Then, Walker turned the gun on himself.
Walker suffered self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the chest and face. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
The woman was holding the couple's seven-month-old baby when she was shot. When investigators arrived on the scene, they found the baby lying in a pool of blood. The baby was not injured in the shooting.
Officials say Walker had been living with Granier for the past month and a half at her father and step-mother's house.
Neighbors tell News 2 that Walker and Granier were good people, and they never would have expected this.
"Heather was a really good person," Donna Metrejean said. "She was sweet and she was a good mom."
However, family members say jealousy fueled the violence.
Detectives say they could not find a restraining order or any type of violence coming from the residence that the couple lived in. But Walker did have several arrests on his record, including aggravated damage to property.
