LAFAYETTE, La.- The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office has fired two deputies after an internal affairs investigation revealed both had been driving a patrol unit that ended up submerged in a pond at a deputy's home on Oct. 23.

Lt. Craig Stansbury, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, says the incident occurred while the two deputies took turns driving a patrol unit through open fields after a private party at a home in southwest Lafayette Parish.

Saturday's Advocate says at some point, one of the deputies unintentionally drove the unit into a pond on the property.

An internal affairs investigation was initiated and Friday the Sheriff's Office announced that the deputies, whose names were not released, had violated policies concerning code of conduct and usage of departmental vehicles.
