Deputies arrest felon after carjacking chase
FRANKLIN - Sheriff's deputies in St. Mary Parish said they arrested a convicted felon who attempted to escape arrest with a shotgun and a carjacked vehicle early Monday morning.
Deputies said they stopped 29-year-old old Irving Phillips Jr. because his brake and license plate lights were not working, but the man exited the vehicle with a shotgun and fled on foot.
The chase began on Highway 182 in Franklin and continued on Cayce St. before Phillips ran into a wooded area on Lee Charles St., according to deputies. Investigators said Phillips stole a vehicle during the chase, using his shotgun to get the driver out of the vehicle.
There were two passengers in the vehicle when the man took it over, but authorities said no one was injured during the pursuit.
Deputies said they located Phillips at a residence on Lee Charles St. and arrested him.
Phillips is charged with resisting an officer, carjacking, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was booked into St. Mary Parish
