BAYOU CORNE - Crews at the Assumption Parish sinkhole scheduled another test today to determine how deep the cavern below it is.

Sonny Cranch with Texas Brine LLC, which owns the land the sinkhole appeared on, said their last tests showed the floor had risen about 1,900 feet, putting material about 375 feet from the roof of the cavern.

He said tests today would see if recent seismic activity caused the material to reach the roof of the cavern, and include a sonar test to get a better picture from inside the cavern.

The sinkhole forced people in the nearby town of Bayou Corne to evacuate almost a year ago. Texas Brine is in the process of appraising land in the area to buy people out of their homes if they choose.
