Denham Springs using grant for new bulletproof vests
DENHAM SPRINGS - The city of Denham Springs plans to apply for a federal grant that could bring in up to 10 new bulletproof vests for its police department.
Right now, 10 of 30 vests need to be replaced. Bulletproof vests last five years and cost around $750 each. Through the grant, Denham Springs would only have to pay half the cost of new vests.
"We had a shooting about 10 years ago where one of our officers was shot point-blank, and as a result of having that vest on it did save his life," said Detective Glenn Lemoine. "I'm not sure a lot of these guys would want to do this job without wearing one, because unfortunately the times we're living in now where officers are being shot more often now than they ever were. It's an integral part of their job."
The Denham Springs Police Department replaced nine vests last year. The city expects to submit the grant application Wednesday after the city council approves the resolution at its meeting Tuesday evening.
