DENHAM SPRINGS - A popular park in Livingston Parish has been temporarily closed to the public amid reports that children are becoming sick after visiting it.

Mayor Gerard Landry confirmed the temporary closure of Kidz Korner Playland to WBRZ after concerned parents took to social media.

According to the posts, some children became infected with Impetigo, a bacterial infection which creates sores on the body, shortly after playing in the park's "splash pad". One of the parents implored others to keep their children away from the splash pad until their concerns were addressed.

While there has been no confirmation the infection actually originated from Kidz Korner, the park is playing it safe and has closed until further notice. Mayor Landry says the park will likely remain closed at least until health officials can provide more information when they return to the office on Wednesday.

"It's really scary, we were going to go to North Park, but maybe instead we'll just go home and bake some cupcakes," said Latreal McClain, a concerned mother.

The mayor says it is believed the infection was transmitted by skin-to-skin contact or via the sharing of towels.
