ALEXANDER COUNTY – A Denham Springs man who owned a dog training business in North Carolina is accused of animal cruelty and abandonment after deputies found several dead animals inside a building he rented.

According to a report from WCNC, the Alexander County Sheriff's Office received a call to investigate dogs that had been left inside a building. Officers found a dead dog and the front door of the building locked. Officers also found two dogs in a pop-up camper in small cages. The dogs appeared to be malnourished and there was no food or water for them, officers said.

Additionally, the power had been turned off to the building in March.

Inside the building, officers discovered five malnourished dogs and one dead dog. Two other dogs and a white cockatoo were found dead inside a freezer. Nine quail were also found dead in a cage outside and an African grey bird was found in a cage without food and water.

Officers contacted Matthew Leeth, 29, who rented and owned a canine training business on the property. Leeth was told he needed to return back to the county.

Leeth was charged with 19 counts of cruelty to animals and 19 counts of misdemeanor abandonment of animals. His bond was set at $200,00.
