DENHAM SPRINGS - The City of Denham Springs has selected an interim replacement for former Chief Scott Jones who was fired last month.

Captain J. Shannon Womack will take over the position. The Denham Springs Police Department website lists Womack as Uniform Patrol Commander. He is also responsible for the Traffic Division, reserve program, Information Technology (IT), and crossing guards. Former Baton Rouge Chief Jeff LeDuff will operate in a consultant position for three months.

Womack served as a lieutenant for the department before he was promoted to captain. He says he's ready to take on the job.

“Definitely excited. It’s a challenge. We knew that going in to it, but we're ready, we're ready for this,” Womack told WBRZ's Natalia Verdina.

Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry said that he is confident Womack is right for th job as he has stepped up recently in the department.

“He's our senior officer and he's been doing the job ever since our men were put on administrative leave and he has been an asset to us,” Landry said.

“I'm sure he will continue to be as we go forward,” he said.

The firing of ex-Chief Jones came after a scandal involving the handling of a domestic violence incident that involved a member of the City Council. Councilman Christopher Davis was arrested for hitting his wife with a door, and an ensuing internal investigation determined that the then-chief gave Davis preferential treatment. That decision cost him his job.
