Defense witness delays Nelson trial
BATON ROUGE - An absent witness delayed proceedings in the federal bribery trial of former New Roads Mayor Tommy Nelson this morning in Baton Rouge.
Defense attorney Page Pate said FBI agent Darin McAllister had not made it to Baton Rouge yet to testify, so the judge ordered the jury back at 1 p.m. when Pate said he expected him in town.
McAllister was involved in the Operation: Blighted Officials undercover investigation that led to the indictment against Nelson. He was convicted last summer of wire fraud in an unrelated case.
Nelson is accused of taking bribes during the operation in exchange for favors to locate a fake garbage can-cleaning business called "Cifer 5000" in his town.
