Decisions on public school funding delayed
BATON ROUGE - The final meeting of a task force considering changes to Louisiana's public school financing formula has been abruptly canceled.
Friday's meeting had been planned for deciding which recommendations to forward to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The cancellation came as some task force members have opposed proposals from the panel chairman, Jay Guillot, a BESE member. Guillot sent an email Thursday night saying the meeting would be postponed, while he continues to work on reaching a consensus.
Among the areas of dispute, Guillot wants to pay for the Course Choice program through the formula. The program offers academic courses and skills training taught by private organizations and universities.
Public school leaders say paying for Course Choice through the formula would siphon dollars from traditional public schools.
