Death of abused 82-year-old now a homicide
BATON ROUGE - Parish officials are now investigating a homicide after an 82-year-old woman was found dead inside a flea-infested home.
The daughter of Bessie Looney and her granddaughter are accused of watching her die without helping her. Joleslie Looney, Bessie's daughter, and Lauren Looney, Bessie's granddaughter, currently face charges of cruelty to the infirmed.
The East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office said Bessie Looney died from chronic immobility, malnutrition and inflammation.
Yesterday, the house where Bessie died was boarded up. Investigators said the home was infested with fleas and covered in feces.
