INDEPENDENCE - A number of railroad crossings where people died are about to close, but drivers who use them are fighting back.

Three crossings where ten people have died are slated for closure in Tangipahoa Parish. The most recent incident was three years ago when a pregnant mother and her three children were killed trying to cross the tracks in an area where there were no crossing arms.

People living near the crossing are sympathetic to the victims, but argue the state should be willing to pay for the appropriate safety measures.

"Seems like they say the four lives that they lost two years ago wasn't worth the $300,000 to put a crossing up there," said resident Frederick Hurst.

State transportation officials said they did study putting in crossing arms, but there wasn't enough room at those locations. Barricades will go into place around those crossings next week.
