Woman dies in Holden fire
A woman is dead following an overnight fire in Holden.
Devon Griggs lived on the upper level of a two-story building with her fiance' Daniel Hymel. He survived by jumping through their apartment window, which was about 20 feet up.
Hymel says they tried to escape out the door, but flames and smoke blocked their way. The window was their only option.
Daniel says he went first, expecting to help break her fall. But, she never came to the window.
Daniel grabbed a ladder and propped it against the house, but it didn't reach the window. Daniel says, "I was on an eight foot ladder banging on the wall, hollering her name. She never said anything."
Investigators believe Devon was overcome by smoke. They believe the fire started on the lower level of the nearly 40 year old building. Investigators say it'll take about 3 weeks to determine a cause.
